Child benefit is a payment that parents and guardians of children are entitled to. This benefit is a type of social security payment and is administered by, in the UK, HM (Her Majesty’s) Revenue & Customs.
HMRC was founded in 2005, and is responsible for administrative affairs regarding taxes, national insurance contributions, family benefit and a variety of related state support.
Normally, in the UK, you will qualify for child benefit if you have children under the age of 16. However, if a child between the ages of 16 to 20 is in some form of education or training, rather than working, then a parent or guardian can still be entitled to receive benefit.
Persons adopting or fostering a child may be eligible for child benefit. In the instance of adoption, claims should be made before the child actually moves into his or her new home. There will also be some cases where you can be claimed for a time prior to the adoption. Child benefit is not affected by the nationality of the child either. A foster parent can claim child benefit, if the child’s accommodation or maintenance isn’t being paid for by the relevant local authority. If unsure, the Child Benefit Office can be contacted via the child benefit phone number.
In the case of looking after a friend or relative’s child, through an informal agreement, a person may also be entitled to receive child benefit. This is dependent, though, on whether or not the child’s accommodation and maintenance is being paid for by the relevant local authority. Child benefit will not be paid to two different people regarding the same child. Call the child benefit number for clarification.
A Guardian’s Allowance can also be paid to someone who is looking after a child, when that child has lost one or both parents.
